Open Enrollment & Special Enrollment Periods

The Affordable Care Act has set the Annual Open Enrollment Period as the regular time of year when people may newly enroll or change to a different plan for Individual and Family coverage. The 2018 Annual Enrollment Period closed on December 31, 2017.

The 2019 Open Enrollment Period will be November 1, 2018, through December 15, 2018.

Certain events that occur during the year will trigger a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) when a person may newly enroll in a plan or make a plan change. An individual generally has 60 days from the triggering event to select a plan before the SEP ends. Documentation is required to prove that you are eligible for a Special Enrollment Period.

If you’ve had one or more of these life events occur in the last 60 days outside of the open enrollment period, you can still apply for insurance through the special enrollment period:

Gained a dependent due to marriage

Gained a dependent due to birth, adoption, or placement for adoption

No longer eligible as a dependent under your prior health insurance due to reaching the maximum age, legal separation, divorce or death of policyholder

No longer eligible for your prior health insurance plan due to termination of employment, reduction in number of hours of employment, loss of employer contribution toward your premiums, or have exhausted your COBRA benefits

Gained access to new health insurance options because of a permanent move

Newly ineligible for payments of the advance premium tax credit

No longer residing or living in your prior health insurance plan’s HMO service area

An error occurred in your previous health plan enrollment

Have adequately demonstrated that your previous health plan or insurer substantially violated a material provision of its contract with you

Lost minimum essential coverage (Due to reasons other than non-payment of premium or rescission)

Becoming a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or gaining lawfully present status

Other qualifying event (as required by applicable laws)
